There was once a miller.

One day he stopped the millstone and went home. That night he slept at home; in the morning he got up, came to the mill, and saw that there was no flour left in the bin. The next night he kept watch. At midnight he saw a fox come in, go to the bin, and take the flour away.

The miller got up, took a stick, and struck the fox. When the fox was caught, it began to cry.

The fox said to the miller, "Let me go.

The fox said, "My lord, Çemçequ Pasha has come; he is asking for your daughter for himself. A hailstorm came down, and a flood came. Çemçequ Pasha had five hundred horsemen; the flood carried them all away. I (say) to you, the flood carried all the women away too. I grabbed onto a rock and stood up. I looked, and a hand came and fell on my leg. I grabbed that hand and pulled him out of the water. Çemçequ Pasha threw himself onto me; I left him there and came." The Pasha of Egypt said, "Let the horsemen meet him; let them come with you and bring Çemçequ Pasha to me. There is a vizier there, but I do not know the name of any Çemçequ Pasha."

The fox got up, went, brought water, and gave it to the miller. The miller got up and went to perform ablution. He went through the palace, but he did not know the way.

The fox waited; when the miller did not come, it went to look for him. It found the miller fallen on the ground, dead.

The fox went to the Pasha of Egypt and said, "Çemçequ Pasha went to perform ablution. I do not know what happened; he fell to the ground and died."
